AI Disclosure Helper
AI-assisted or AI-generated? Find out in 60 seconds.
Amazon asks authors to declare AI-generated text, images and translations. Answer four quick questions and we'll tell you what needs declaring, with wording you can copy. Free, no sign-up, and nothing you enter leaves this page.
The short answer
AI-generated: declare it
An AI tool created text, images (including your cover) or a translation that is still in your finished book. This counts even if you edited it heavily afterwards.
AI-assisted: no declaration needed
You created the content yourself, and used AI only to brainstorm ideas, edit, refine or check for errors.

Common situations
| What you did | Declare? |
|---|---|
| Wrote the book yourself and used Grammarly, ChatGPT or similar to proofread or tidy your sentences | No (AI-assisted) |
| Asked AI for plot, title or character ideas, then wrote everything yourself | No (AI-assisted) |
| AI drafted some chapters and you rewrote them | Yes: AI-generated text |
| Your cover was made with Midjourney, DALL-E or a similar tool, even if edited afterwards | Yes: AI-generated images |
| You used AI to translate your book into another language | Yes: AI-generated translation |
| You're not sure whether AI wording is still in the book | Declare it. It's safer to say too much than too little. |
Good to know
Does declaring AI stop my book being published?
No. Declaring is about being accurate, not about being judged. Books with declared AI content can still be published, as long as they meet every other content guideline. Getting the declaration wrong is what causes problems.
If I edit AI-written text heavily, does it become mine?
Not for Amazon's purposes. If the words started as AI text and are still in the book, they count as AI-generated, however much you changed them. If you deleted the AI draft and wrote the passage from scratch, that's your own writing.
Should I keep records?
Yes. A simple note of which tools you used, and for what, helps if a retailer ever asks. Keep earlier drafts if you can.
Based on Amazon KDP's published guidance on AI content, as at September 2026. Retailer rules can change, and Amazon makes the final decision on every book. This helper is general guidance, not legal advice.
